HOW DO I CHOOSE THE MOST APPROPRIATE SAFETY GATE?

Choosing the best child safety gate can be a daunting task; and what exactly does the term “best” imply? Safety gates come in all styles, heights, materials and price points. Basic pressure gates in plastic or metal can be considered if the areas to contain are rooms as opposed to stairways. But keep in mind that every pressure gate’s design will include a threshold, and the overall width of the opening will always be reduced due to construction of the gate that needs to be attached to both walls at the top and base molding at the floor. If the area is “high traffic”, or there are family members inclined to trip over the threshold, then you may want to consider a mounted swing gate instead.

Swing gates (which allow the full width of the opening to be utilized) are always a good choice, and nothing less should be installed at the top of any stairway. They are typically costlier than a basic pressure gate, and you’ll need to be mindful of the overall dimensions. Mounted gates can be tricky, and may need an extension to fit openings greater than 40”. Professional installation is usually suggested unless you are skilled and creative at attaching these potentially lifesaving devices. Instructions may be confusing and without all the necessary tools and fasteners on site, the results could be disastrous.

Most safety gates look like safety gates, and usually the new parents can’t wait to remove them. The latest safety gate on the market is a custom removable hardwood swing gate, stained or painted to match the décor of your home. This custom gate will obviously be more expensive, but it will be taller and studier than a common metal or wood swing gate, and will need to be measured and installed by a trained professional. The choice is always yours, but the old adage “you get what you pay for” certainly applies here!
